On behalf of the Skanda Vale Hospice
we would like to thank everyone who made
the sponsored walk a success.
The Pembrokeshire walk in support of the Hospice
is one of the most beautiful events you could be part of. The
scenery is breathtaking, the company is fun and yes, the
refreshments along the way are more than appetising. Even the
weather keeps you engaged – this year it was a three course delight
– sunshine, followed by freezing rain, and finally glorious sunshine
greeting us all to the finish line and the well deserved picnic for
all at the end.
A well organised day which includes some suitably arranged chaos in
terms of transport pick ups, who is following whom and who is
sitting in which mini bus but that is all very much part of the fun.
It would be thoroughly boring otherwise. 89 walkers in total who had
all chosen to go on various walking challenges – 3miles, 7miles and
10 miles. We excitedly gathered at Stackpole Quay base camp for
registration and initial refreshments (and believe you me it’s a day
of refreshments!). It’s also lovely to catch up with people you
haven’t seen for a long and short while. Conversations are
abruptedly broken as names are shouted out – oh its mini bus time
again –ready to take the 10 mile walkers to their starting point.
Just like the confusion of the weather, walkers’ attire range from
good waterproof jackets and trousers to shorts and flip flops.
We commence our walk in the most exquisite scenery and bright
sunshine which by the click of your fingers turns into a torrential
downpour. It feels quite nippy as we take our first pictures. We
continue our walk (breaking out into smaller groups) amidst rolling
hills, jagged rocks, numerous caves and incredibly unspoilt scenery.
Even those who were fearful of heights couldn’t help but admire what
they saw so long as they didn’t look too close to the edge! Everyone
is able to walk at whatever pace they choose with guides at the
beginning and end so that no-one got lost or straggles too much! You
meet up with the fellow walkers – have a chat, stop for a bit admire
the view and continue.
Our route passed Bullslaughter Bay, Huntman Leap and the quaint St
Govan’s Chapel where we met up with the 7 mile walkers before
proceeding through the long stretch of Broadhaven Beach. Finally we
found ourselves around the beautiful and tranquil Bosherson Lily
Ponds, meeting up with some lone 3 mile walkers and….then…..just as
you think you have achieved your goal along comes the steep incline
at Bartundle Bay. Climbing the staircase, your legs feel shaky and
you ask how long is there to go? …. but hey..there’s a unique chance
for another vital photo opportunity which is also an excuse to rest
I dare say – one more picture for the road just in case we missed
it.
We made it to the finish line which was nicely decorated.
Exhilarated and some exhausted, we were all treated to a sumptuous
meal back at base camp and exchanged experiences of the day. The
weather by this time was just so warm and sunny – warm enough to fit
in a quick sun bathing session. Its a wonderful fun day for all
whether it’s with your family and loved ones, friends, or even on
your own. Most important it’s for a great cause. If you haven’t done
this walk – I highly recommend it. If you have already enjoyed it –
see you next year!
