A warm welcome to Skanda Vale’s seva (volunteering) group page! This is a brand new initiative dreamed up by devotees of Skanda Vale temple. We have three aims:
- To improve the experience of visiting pilgrims.
- To help Skanda Vale run smoothly, especially when it’s busy.
- To strengthen our experience of the Divine through selfless service.
Everyone is welcome to join in. You don’t need any experience, just a willingness to help. We can provide any training and equipment needed.
What I would love to see you all do is slowly clear the deck. You have the opportunity to restore your own spirituality by helping people. Service to humanity. Service to all of life. That is the way to God – that is the one way you can clear this karma that impairs your vision of God.Guru Sri Subramanium
Here are some of the ways you can help:
You’ll need good communication skills to help keep pilgrims informed as they queue for pujas. Volunteers will also help in seating the devotees and directing them around the temple areas.
We need qualified drivers to help disabled and elderly pilgrims access the Maha Shakti Temple and the coach park at the top of the hill.
During busy summer months, bank holidays and festival periods we need help regulating the traffic. You’ll have a hi-vis jacket and a walkie talkie to help direct visitors to the car and minibus parking areas.
Help to prepare the area at the top near the Maha Shakti Temple for our pilgrims – tidy the marquee, sweep the tracks, arrange furniture etc.
We’ll give you litter picking equipment so you can go around the ashram at your own leisure, helping to keep the ashram clean and attractive.
Male and female volunteers are very welcome to help keep the respective bathrooms, toilets and shower areas clean for our pilgrims.
Volunteers can help emptying bins, taking them to the bin container outside the temple main gates. Gloves and other necessary equipments will be provided to help in this seva.
Volunteers can help carry pots of rice, dal and other prasadam to and from the temple kitchen to the dining area. Help will also be needed in serving the prasadam and tidying up the dining area afterwards.
Devotees coming to Skanda Vale are so generous – they bring a variety of offerings to the Lord and Divine Mother. These offerings need to be arranged in a specific way by placing them in trays, before taking them into the shrine at the end of the puja.
Volunteers can help a community member making tea and coffee, serving snacks and ice cream to the customers. This shop is run on a voluntary donation basis to help raise funds for Skanda Vale Hospice.
Volunteers can serve pilgrims buying music, books, pictures and other temple items in our gift shop. All funds raised here help us to care for families affected by life-limiting illnesses at Skanda Vale Hospice.
Volunteers can help answering the phone and providing simple temple information to visiting pilgrims.
