Volunteer doctors, nurses & carers

Skanda Vale Hospice is a palliative care project established by Guru Sri Subramanium in 1993 to transform the experience of death and dying. Most of our team, including management, nurses and carers, work as volunteers, without pay. The hospice gives all of us a chance to develop our spiritual (and professional) lives through mindful, compassionate care.

"Patient-centred care is about being the patient, yourself. It’s about identifying yourself with that patient. So it’s about having that incredible sensitivity. That is what transforms people. That’s what a patient says is a tangible experience of love when they come through the door of the hospice. That’s half the battle done."

Swami Suryananda

"All of us have got that inner potential strength within us, it wells up to the surface. It’s in us. The kind of things that you access within yourself is on a completely different level. Our Guru, whom you all love, has given us this insight to look and say – this is one way to worship God and venerate God that surpasses everything else."

Dr Damitha Ratnasinghe

"People tell us all sorts of nonsense, you know – that we're angels – which we’re not at all. But people are overwhelmed by the love that somehow just flows so easily here."

Nicky Gilbert – Volunteer

"I have tried to explain to so many people what this feeling is like here. And I can’t. There aren’t words to describe it. This place is full of people that care – they are volunteers most of them. And we’re not just talking about any staff, we’re talking about nurses and doctors. These are people that are qualified. They could charge money – but they volunteer."

Brandon Utley – Patient

"It’s renewed my faith in human nature. It really has. I mean, I was getting to be very sceptical about the human race, but I’ve discovered here a vein of humanity that is very, very special."

Peter Butler – Patient
